Our lessons are taught out of Modoc Riding Ring, which is a private membership based equestrian facility located at 4317 Modoc Rd. Santa Barbara, CA.
All riders must be members of the facility in order to ride and take lessons. Any non-members can pay a $20 day use fee to enjoy the facilities and ride for the day.
Coach Hannah teaches Wed-Sat each week. We occasionally open other lesson days as well (if we have rain outs and need to offer make ups to riders).
We also camps sprinkled throughout the year! The best way to stay in the know with camp information is to follow us on Instagram: @rockinghorseeqsb
We teach youth and adults!
We accept riders 7 and up. However, if your child is 6 years old, and you feel they have the bandwidth for an hour lesson, we are open to having 6 year olds join us where space permits. We do not currently offer lessons or ride time for kiddos under 6 years old.
Note for all, but mainly for adults- Due to the smaller size/stature and/or age of our horses (we also have ponies but they are even smaller), we can only accept riders with a max weight limit of 210lbs in order to stay in line with their weight capacity. Unfortunately, we do not have ride time available for riders above this weight capacity as we do not have larger horses at this time. Thank you for understanding!
Another thing to note for adults is-
we offer private lessons only (at this time). We do not currently have any preexisting adult groups. Although, we are open to creating a small adult group if all the stars can align! Please reach out for more info.
All lessons are 1 hour long, and encompass the full spectrum of horsemanship. Each lesson will include grooming, tacking and riding.
We ride mostly in the arenas, but we occasionally include a trail ride as well!
We feel teaching groundwork is extremely important for a well rounded horseman/horsewoman, so when the arenas are too wet for riding due to weather, or if groundwork is part of our curriculum for that month specifically, we will focus on groundwork (more detailed tacking knowledge, round penning etc.) and/or trail riding. Being able to safely and effectively handle yourself and your horse in all environments is vital!
We are happy to have riders come try a lesson, or pop in here-and-there to fill cancellation spots. However, the goal is to have riders who ride weekly with us. Consistency is definitely key when looking to become a strong and capable rider!
Once a rider has come for a trial lesson and decided they would like to ride regularly with us, we will look to see if we have a weekly spot for them! Until then, they will continue to fill in cancellation spots. We prioritize these riders until they move up into groups.
**Note- We are currently full and on a waitlist for our afterschool and Saturday lessons. If you/your child has a flexible weekday schedule earlier in the day 10:45am-2:15pm (such as adults, homeschooled kiddos or kids who are released from school by 2pm some days of the week) let us know, as that often moves things much faster!
All riders start with private lessons and move at their own pace.
While some more confident riders may be ready to shift into a group lesson setting after a handful of lessons, most riders will need 1-3 months of private lessons (or possibly longer, especially for younger children) before shifting into a group ride setting. It has less to do with age and more to do with ability and confidence, but sometimes age is a factor. This decision is solely up to Hannah and is made with many factors in mind, namely safety!
